The front wall lacks embellishment of the vertical mortar, but the sides differ in that the V shaped verticals are present in some areas. Roudabush Survey page 73
FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF NEWFANE.
This society was organized May 27th, 1829, with twenty five members, and Elder Jehiel Weisner as their pastor, who presided over them until 1832. During his pastorate, he received into the church fifty-three persons, and received for his services the sum of $24. The meetings of the society were held at private houses, and at the schoolhouse near Judge Van Horn's.
From January, 1832, to August, 1833, the pulpit was supplied by preachers from other places. Elder Amos Reed was the next pastor, and in 1834 the church organized as a religious society under the statutes of the State. Elder Gershom B. Day, became pastor in 1835, and through his efforts the preaching services were changed to Kempville, which caused a division of the society. At a special meeting held at Olcott on the 20th of July, 1839, the society was again united.
In 1840 Rev. John Halliday became pastor, and remained about two years. November 6th, 1842, Elder Burtt became the pastor, and during his labors the society built its present church edifice, which is of cobblestone. In 1856 it was repaired at a cost of $1,400, and June 9th, 1857, it was rededicated. Rev. Dr. Robinson, of Rochester Seminary, preaching the sermon. Besides the above mentioned, the following clergymen have served this people as pastor: R. D. Pierce, N. Sherwood, Hull Taylor, Elder Blaine, Dr. Irons, E. J. Scott, T. Fuller, A. C. Kingsley, Waldron, E. F. Craine, S. P. Barker, A. G. Bowles, C. S. Sheffield, J. S. Webber, W. Pike, C. H. Ham, T. G. Wright, G. W. Meade. There have been received into this church since its organization 371 persons. The church property is valued at $7,000.
